São João del Rei, also spelled São João del Rey or São João del-Rei, is a Brazilian municipality in the state of Minas Gerais. It is a historical city with a XVIII century architecture. The current population is estimated in 85,000 inhabitants. It is located in the drainage basin of the Rio Grande and its terrain is located in the Mantiqueira mountains. It is centre for the cities in the south and southeast of Minas Gerais. São João del-Rei is a magnificent, modern, agitated and contemporaneous, although quiet and cultural in its historical area. It possess a vast architectural range, not only the baroque. It is possible to observe several architectural styles in the historical area of the city. The city was founded by the bandeirantes and Tomé Portes del-Rei is considered the city's founder. The small village situated at the south of Minas Gerais was created as an output between Paraty and other cities in the central region of Minas Gerais, such as Ouro Preto, Mariana, Conselheiro Lafaiete. It was a path for the mining products of these localities be transported to the coast and, then, to Portugal. Later, huge amount of gold was found in the city's vicinity. São João del-Rei is also known for being a university town due to educational institutions present in the city, the high range of courses and the huge expansion of UFSJ and the large number of student republics throughout the city. São João del-Rei is also known for having excellent educational institutions, such as the Federal University of São João del-Rei (UFSJ), which has a great variety of courses.
